Let’s put politics aside, support GH¢1 dumsor levy to save energy sector — Afenyo-Markin to the Minority MPs

Minority Leader in Parliament and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has backed the controversial GH¢1 per litre fuel levy, also known as the dumsor levy.

He is urging members of the Minority and the opposition to put politics aside and support the government’s efforts to save the country’s struggling energy sector.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Friday, June 13, Afenyo-Markin cautioned that rejecting the levy could lead to the collapse of the energy sector and force government to introduce more taxes to restore it.

“They say they are going to use the levy to address the dumsor problem because of the challenge we have there. So, Mr. Speaker, I shall conclude by saying that this promise made by the Honorable Minister for Energy is something that all of us should embrace.

“Colleagues, we may talk politics, but the energy crisis, if it starts, will bite all of us. In fact, if we don’t deal with it now, it will affect the economy in general. So I believe the Minister must be encouraged to walk the talk, and all of us should get on board so that the situation doesn’t get out of hand and force the introduction of another levy,” he said.

Parliament passed the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on Tuesday, June 3 under a certificate of urgency.

The bill, which has since been assented to, introduces an additional GHS1 charge on every litre of fuel to help tackle mounting liabilities in the energy sector.

President John Dramani Mahama, who described the move as difficult but necessary, has assured that the projected GHS5.7 billion annual revenue from the levy will be ring-fenced and audited to ensure transparency.
