A detailed report on 2020 and 2024 electoral violence submitted

A detailed report describing instances of electoral violence from the general elections in 2020 and 2024 has been delivered to President John Mahama, he revealed.

After receiving, he promised that if misconduct is proven, those responsible will be held accountable and victims will be compensated.

President Mahama emphasized in his Friday speech to GJA leadership that he got the report last week and that it is a component of his pledge to uphold democratic principles and prevent political violence in Ghana.

He indicated that after the Attorney General completes his recommendations, prosecuting options and victim compensation procedures will be made.

Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), wrote the report, which details violent events that occurred during both election cycles, such as gunshots and altercations between security forces and party supporters.

The Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has now formally received the findings for review and additional action.

In order to investigate the circumstances behind these election-related deaths—a total of eight in 2020 and three in 2024—the President had already instructed the IGP to form a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) task team.

He also ordered that important components of the investigation include forensic analysis, witness interviews, and in-depth reviews conducted in coordination with the Electoral Commission.

The Attorney General has also been requested to assess appropriate and just compensation for victims and their families, reaffirming the need for fair, open, and inclusive reform and restitution initiatives.
