
Early on Thursday, September 25, 2025, a galamsey (illegal mining) pit collapsed near Twifo Mampong in the Central Region, trapping four people beneath in a tragic catastrophe. The death of one person has been confirmed.
According to reports, five people were employed inside the illegal mining pit at the time of the event. Four were underground, while the other was running the pumping machine above, according to the eyewitnesses. The operator made it out alive and hurried home to sound the alarm.
Police and rescue teams, including National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials, are currently on-site, working tirelessly to retrieve the remaining victims and secure the area.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Isaac Yawson, stated that preliminary information suggests the pit belongs to a known illegal miner.
He explained that the young men had allegedly entered the site secretly at night without the owner’s consent.
The DCE confirmed that he had ordered the immediate arrest of the pit owner, as rescue efforts continue to either retrieve the trapped individuals alive or recover their bodies.
