ECG Upgrades Transformer at Suame Magazine to Boost Businesses

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ashanti West Region, has taken another significant step towards supporting local businesses and improving power reliability with the upgrade of a transformer at Suame Magazine in the Suame District.

The Company recently upgraded an existing 50kVA transformer to a 100kVA capacity to meet the growing electricity demands of customers within the area. The project, completed on Thursday, January 22, 2025, forms part of ECG’s ongoing commitment to delivering reliable and stable electricity to support economic activities across its operational areas.

Supporting One of Ghana’s Busiest Industrial Hubs
Suame Magazine remains one of the most vibrant industrial enclaves in Ghana and a major centre for automobile repairs, metal fabrication, and spare parts trading. The area is home to thousands of artisans and small business owners whose livelihoods depend heavily on a steady power supply.

With businesses and workshops expanding daily, the upgrade is expected to ease pressure on the previous transformer while ensuring improved and stable electricity supply to support productivity in the enclave.

Speaking on the project, the Suame District Manager, Ing. Emmanuel Adusei Opoku, explained that the intervention is aimed at meeting the increasing demand for power in the area.“Upgrading the 50kVA transformer to 100kVA will help address the growing electricity needs of our cherished customers at Suame Magazine,” he said.

He reaffirmed ECG’s commitment to supporting business growth, noting that reliable electricity plays a crucial role in sustaining the operations of artisans and spare parts dealers. “As a company, we believe that once our customers consume power, we are in business. We will therefore continue to support the operations of our customers because without electricity, many of these businesses cannot operate efficiently,” Ing. Adusei Opoku added.

Ongoing Infrastructure Improvements
The District Manager further disclosed that the Company is implementing several other infrastructure improvement projects within the district. These include the construction of a sub-transmission line from the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) to the Airport Substation, as well as additional transformer upgrades aimed at improving supply reliability and attracting more businesses to the Ashanti Region.

Public Advisory
Ing. Adusei Opoku also cautioned the public against engaging unauthorized electricians during power outages. He explained that such practices often result in illegal connections, overloading of transformers, and the use of substandard fuses, which can damage equipment and disrupt power supply.

Customers experiencing outages are encouraged to report through the ECG National Contact Centre on 0302 611 611, the Suame District fault line on 0200 848 607, by visiting the District Office at Ampabame, using the ECG PowerApp, or through ECG’s official social media platforms.

Additional Upgrade at Asamang
In a related development, ECG has also upgraded a 100kVA transformer to 200kVA at Asamang to improve electricity supply within the community.

According to the Ashanti West Regional Engineer, Ing. Emmanuel Osei Amoako, the upgrade replaced a transformer that was operating close to its maximum capacity.

“This upgrade is expected to boost business activities and provide a more stable power supply to customers within the enclave,” he noted.
