The Komenda Sugar Factory has been disconnected from power and water supply due to unpaid bills, according to Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare. The factory owes significant debts to the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Company, leading to the disconnection.
The factory’s machinery and equipment are also in poor condition, having not been refurbished since construction in 2016. This has prevented the factory from operating at full capacity, contributing to its financial struggles. The government plans to engage a transactional advisor to package the factory for private sector participation and secure a strategic investor to revive operations.
The Komenda Sugar Factory was envisioned to reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported sugar and create jobs, but operational setbacks have left it largely idle. The minister cited raw material shortages as a major obstacle, with farming communities disengaged due to lack of institutional support and unclear procurement arrangements.
