President Mahama Holds High-Level Talks with UN Secretary-General at TICAD-9

On the sidelines of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama held bilateral discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, focusing on multilateralism, regional security, and Ghana’s economic recovery.

In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, President Mahama said the talks underscored the importance of deepening multilateral cooperation and accelerating progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A key highlight of the discussion was the ongoing security crisis in the Sahel and broader West Africa.

President Mahama welcomed the Secretary-General’s recognition of Ghana’s leadership role within ECOWAS and the African Union, particularly in efforts to forge collective regional responses to instability and terrorism threats.

“I reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to collective, regional solutions,” Mahama noted, as he reiterated the country’s dedication to promoting peace and security across the sub-region.

President Mahama also emphasized Ghana’s steadfast support for multilateralism and called for reforms within the United Nations system.

“There is a pressing need to further democratise the UN to enhance its representativeness and effectiveness,” he stated.

Touching on Ghana’s economic rebound, Mahama provided updates on the country’s ongoing debt restructuring process, highlighting efforts aimed at securing long-term fiscal stability.

He also extended appreciation to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for its continued support of Ghana’s development agenda.

TICAD-9 brings together African leaders, international organizations, and development partners to strengthen cooperation between Japan and Africa, with this year’s focus including peacebuilding, climate resilience, and inclusive economic growth.
