Ghana Donates 2,400 bags of rice, poly thanks and other relief items to Sudan, Jamaica and Cuba

President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the Republic of Ghana, has donated a large consignment of food and essential relief materials to support victims of the war in Sudan, and those affected by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica and Cuba, estimated at around GH¢10 million.

The donation includes:

2,400 bags of Adidome rice

1,500 mattresses and 500 pillows

100 cartons of fortified gari mix

50,000 pieces of T-shirts

Three 20-footer containers of assorted chocolate and cocoa products

20 pieces of 500-litre water storage tanks (poly thanks)

20 pieces of hand-wash stations

10 pieces of emergency portable toilets

540 bags of sugar

377 boxes of assorted medications

According to President Mahama, 50% of the items will be sent to Jamaica, 30% to Cuba, and 20% to the Red Cross Society in Sudan to support displaced persons in their camps.

He said the gesture continues Ghana’s long-standing commitment to supporting nations in times of crisis. President Mahama noted that although global attention has largely shifted to conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, the humanitarian crisis in Sudan remains extremely severe, as thousands are still living in camps with limited support.

He stressed that while Ghana’s donation may not completely solve the suffering in these affected countries, it is important that “every nation contributes something, no matter how small,” to reduce the burden on innocent populations.

President Mahama recalled that Ghana has offered similar help in the past to countries including Guinea, Congo, and Japan.

“Jamaica has been the hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa, followed by Cuba, and we believe it is right that Ghana stands with them at this moment,” he said.

He added that this support package is a demonstration of Ghana’s compassion, responsibility, and solidarity on the global stage.
